Bobcats Split At CenturyTel Premier

SAN MARCOS - The Bobcat volleyball team opened the CenturyTel Premier in winning fashion, beating Houston 3-1 (30-25, 30-27, 21-30, 30-23), but could not complete the sweep, as Texas State dropped a 3-1 decision to Cal State-Fullerton (24-30, 30-25, 24-30, 28-30) in the day's fourth and final game. Missouri (5-2) remains the only unbeaten team in the field, while Texas State (3-4) and Cal State-Fullerton (4-4) are each 1-1 and Houston (3-5) sits at 0-2. The 2007 CenturyTel Premier concludes on Saturday, Sept. 8, with a noon match between Cal State-Fullerton and Houston before Texas State and Missouri square off at 2 p.m. Game One: Missouri vs. Cal State-Fullerton Missouri started its day off with a sweep as the Tigers beat Cal State-Fullerton 3-0 (30-24, 30-20, 30-17). Julianna Klein had 19 kills and 10 digs, and Tatum Ailes added 17 digs for Missouri in the win. The Titans did not have a player reach 10 kills as Brittany Moore and Erin Saddler each had eight, and Missouri out-hit Cal State-Fullerton .370-to-.158 for the match. Game Two: Texas State vs. Houston Texas State overcame hitting percentages of .000 in game three and .095 in game four to defeat Houston 3-1 (30-25, 30-27, 21-30, 30-23). Four Bobcats recorded double-digit kill totals, led by Amy Weigle's 15. Texas State also had five players with at least 10 digs as Kacey Wimpy led the way with 24. Shelbi Irvin, Jessica Weynand and Lawrencia Brown all posted double-doubles, while Houston's Justine Farmer led the Cougars with 20 kills and added 18 digs. Up 2-0 at halftime, Texas State came out flat in game three but rebounded to build a 22-9 lead in game four, cruising to the 30-23 win to take the match.
Game Three: Missouri vs. Houston Na Yang's 19 kills led three Tigers with double-digit kill totals as Missouri rebounded from a 31-29 loss in game one to breeze past Houston 3-1 (29-31, 30-22, 30-15, 30-21). Julianna Klein had 15 kills while Weiwen Wang added 12 for Missouri, while Justine Farmer posted match-highs with 23 kills and 16 digs to lead the Cougars. Missouri outhit Houston .312-to-.155 for the match and limited the Cougars to a -.098 attack percentage in game three and a .091 attack percentage in game four. Game Four: Texas State vs. Cal State-Fullerton In the day's closest match, Texas State and Cal State-Fullerton battled tough through all four games, but Texas State could not overcome the Titans in games three and four, losing 3-1 (24-30, 30-25, 24-30, 28-30). Jessica Weynand and Lawrencia Brown recorded double-doubles for the second straight match, with Weynand leading the Bobcats in kills with 16. Brittany Collins also recorded a double-double, tallying 30 assists and 11 digs. In game three, Cal State-Fullerton used a 7-2 run to gain separation, holding on for the 30-24 win. Game four featured both teams trading points for virtually the entire game, as the largest lead for either side was a 22-19 advantage for the Titans. Texas State rallied to tie it at 24-24, and the teams would trade points again until the Titans gained the advantage, winning on a Bobcat service error to take the match. |
