Ashley Ellis Named A SLC Women's Tennis All-Academic Second Team Selection

Frisco, Texas - Texas State senior Ashley Ellis has been named a Capital One Bank/Southland Conference All-Academic Second Team selection the league office announced Wednesday. "It is exciting to see that all of Ashley's hard work on and off the court has finally paid off," said Tory Plunkett, Texas State's head coach. "Ashley pushed herself all four years at Texas State to be the best that she could be not only on the tennis court, but in the classroom as well. "This is the sixth recognition Ashley has received during the past two months for her outstanding academic and athletic achievements and I could not be more proud of her. I'm lucky to have had such a wonderful young lady on the tennis team, and she will be deeply missed." Ellis was named the Texas State women's student-athlete of the Year in 2009 after maintaining a 3.79 grade point average with a double major of history and political science. She is a four-time winner of Texas State's "Cream of the Crop" award after maintaining a 4.0 GPA at least one semester during the year and been named to the Dean's List six times. She also received the Academic Excellence award from the school's Political Science Department in 2008 and 2009 and from the History Department in 2009. In addition, she has been selected as a member of the SLC Commissioner's Honor Roll in each of her four years at Texas State, and helped the women's tennis team earn Texas State's team academic award as the women's team with overall highest GPA for the second straight year.
On the court, Ellis was named a All-Southland Conference Second-Team selection as the No. 2 singles player after compiling an 8-3 record against league opponents. She ended her senior season with a 12-5 overall record to tie for the team lead in wins after compiling a 3-1 mark as a No. 1 singles player. In addition, she had a 13-3 doubles record as a member of Texas State's No. 2 doubles team, including an 8-3 mark against SLC doubles teams. She ended the year with a 13-4 overall record after going 1-1 in No. 1 doubles play.
The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators from each Southland Conference school. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad. Student-athletes earn automatic qualification onto the Southland Conference All-Academic Team if they maintain a GPA of 3.0 and were also named first-team All-Southland Conference and/or the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine All-Academic District VI At Large team. The Southland Conference All-Academic Teams include: Irina Sotnikova of Sam Houston State, Maria Gutierrez of Lamar, Kathrin Lange and Bianca Schulz of Northwestern State and Holly Phillips and Nathalie Wallin of UTSA on the First Team, with Ellis, Adna Curukovic of Northwestern State, Gabriela Gadeva of Stephen F. Austin, Klara Jagosova of UT Arlington, Paty Manzur of Sam Houston State and Karen Scida of UTSA on the Second Team. |
