SAN ANTONIO - Lamar was able to overcome playing a student-athlete short and post a 4-3 win over Texas State Friday in the first round of the Southland Conference Tennis Championship being played at Texas-San Antonio.

Without a player to fill its roster, Lamar was able to win both of its doubles matches to take the first point. Pamela Martinez and Ashrafi Manijee combined for an 8-2 win over Texas State's Lainy Chafitz and Rabea Hartmann at No. 1. Kaltrina Harbuzi and Maria Gutierrez's 8-5 win over Ashley Ellis and Andrea Giraldo secured the point.

Texas State would gain a point at No. 6 singles without the match starting and the teams split at the top two seeds to make the score 2-2 with three other singles matches being decided in three sets.

Hartmann, playing at No. 4, avenged an earlier loss to Manijee, posting a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory but Martinez defeated Chafitz at No. 3 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 as the match came down to No. 5 singles. Manami Kuroda was able to break a 5-5 tie in the third set of her match with Texas State's Sumarie Muller and went on for a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 victory.

With the win, Lamar advances to play SLC regular-season champion Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday. Texas State ended its season with an 11-7 record.
