SAN MARCOS - The women's tennis team opened the season with a defeat as they fell to SMU 6-1 at the Texas State University Tennis Complex on Sunday.

The match was delayed an hour due to equipment issues for the Mustangs.

SMU jumped out early by picking up 2 of 3 doubles matches and never trailed from that point. The doubles team of Ashley Ellis and Lainy Chafitz picked up a win for the Bobcats with an 8-5 victory over Georgiana Marta and Monica Neveklovska.

In singles action, the Mustangs proved to be too much for the Bobcats by winning 5 of 6 matches. The lone Texas State point came from senior Jana Cucciniello as she defeated Monika Neveklovska, 6-3, 0-6, 12-10.

"I was very proud of the team for their support of the last match," head coach Tory Plunkett said. "The point was a total team effort."

The three months off from match play proved to be a factor in the early going, but the Bobcats picked it up a notch in the second set.

The overall play of the Bobcats was very tough and made SMU think. If the team continues to work hard and play with that type of effort, they will give Texas A&M a well fought match.

The Bobcats will travel to No. 29 Texas A&M for their next match on Feb. 4 and will be back in action at home Feb. 11 when they host North Texas.
