Texas State Clinches SLC Tourney No. 3 Seed
May 6, 2007
CORPUS CHRISTI - Alex Newton drove in both Bobcat runs, and Ragan Blake recorded her tenth shutout as Texas State closed out its regular season with a 2-0 win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday. The win paired with a UTSA loss to clinch the No. 3 seed for the Bobcats (29-24, 18-12). Texas State finished with one more loss than both McNeese State and Nicholls State, but a higher conference winning percentage gave the `Cats the higher seed. The Bobcats got on the board in the fifth inning when Leah Boatright scored on a Newton single to right field. Boatright singled and had advanced to third on a sacrifice and a wild pitch to set up the first run of the game. The `Cats then added insurance in the seventh when Newton executed a perfect squeeze bunt that scored Jill Kloesel. Blake ran into some trouble in the final inning as the Islanders got the tying run to first, but Blake got out of the jam and held on for her SLC-leading tenth shutout of the season. She allowed only three hits on the day and struck out three, finishing the regular season with a 23-13 record. Jennifer Cummings took the loss for A&M-CC, giving up one earned run on four hits while falling to 9-27. Texas State now heads to Huntsville for the 2007 Southland Conference Softball Tournament, hosted by Sam Houston State. The Bobcats will take on UTSA in the tournament's opening round on Thursday, May 10.
