Bobcats Blanked By No. 13 Longhorns, 2-0
April 4, 2007
SAN MARCOS - No. 13 Texas proved too much for Texas State to handle as the Bobcats fell 2-0 on Wednesday night in a nonconference home game. The loss dropped Texas State to an even .500 record on the season at 18-18 while the Longhorns improved to 27-9. The Longhorns scored their first run of the game in the second when Kori Cook scored on an RBI double by Jacqueline Williams. Cook had reached on a fielder's choice and then stolen second and third on a play where Alex Newton lost track of the ball after it dropped out of her glove while she tried to apply a tag at second base. The score would remain 1-0 through five innings thanks to some great defense by Texas, who robbed the Bobcats of a sure run in the fifth. With Jill Kloesel pinch running at second after Jetta Weinheimer had walked and advanced on a fielder's choice, Tamara Keller stepped in. Keller delivered a bloop into shallow left field, but Texas shortstop Loryn Johnson made a diving play with two outs to keep it 1-0. The Longhorns then added a run in the top of the sixth on a Kacie Gaskin solo home run, and strong Texas pitching did the rest to seal the win. Texas nearly recorded a combined no-hitter, but Jetta Weinheimer broke it up on a single through the left side with two outs in the bottom of the seventh off of Erin Tresselt. Ashton Peters tried to start a rally, but struck out to end the game. Ragan Blake took the loss but pitched out of several jams, allowing only two runs on eight hits despite Texas getting a runner in scoring position in every inning but the fourth. She also walked five while adding four strikeouts and fell to 13-9 on the year.
Texas starter Meagan Denny earned her 18th win of the season, pitching three innings. Torrey Schroeder also saw action, and Tresselt picked up her third save with two innings of relief. The Bobcats will now dive quickly back into Southland Conference play, leaving Thursday for a weekend series at Northwestern State. Texas State will play a doubleheader on Friday against the Lady Demons and a single game on Saturday, as the series is moved up a day because of Easter weekend. |
