Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score
SAN MARCOS - After managing three hits in a close 1-0 game one loss, Texas State softball rebounded with a 6-2 victory in game two of a doubleheader Thursday at Bobcat Field. Six Red Raider errors led to six unearned runs in game two, although Texas Tech (15-13) did snap a six-game losing streak against the Bobcats (15-13) with the game one win. In game one, Ragan Blake gave up a solo home run to Amanda Myers that gave Texas Tech a 1-0 lead in the second inning. The Bobcats advanced a runner to second base with less than two outs in three separate innings, but failed to bring the run home to tie it. Texas State's last chance came in the seventh when Leah Boatright walked and was sacrificed over to second. With one out and the tying run in scoring position, Texas Tech's Ashly Jacobs got Alex Newton to pop out before Lacey Duncan grounded out hard to shortstop to end the game. Jacobs allowed three hits and three walks while striking out six in the shutout win to improve to 12-6 while Ragan Blake took the loss for the `Cats, allowing one run on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts to go to 11-7. Blake did record her 100th strikeout of the season in the loss, striking out Ashley Parker for the game's first out. Searching for a split, the `Cats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning of game two when Ryan Kos singled in Boatright and Newton after a double steal had advanced both runners into scoring position. The Red Raiders got a run back in the third to make it 2-1 on an RBI groundout by Montana Patin that plated Natalie Kula, who had been safe at second on a Tamara Keller throwing error. Bobcat starter Sarah Lancour worked out of the inning though, and it would be the only run she allowed on the day.
More errors would follow in the fourth, this time from the Texas Tech defense. After Newton walked, Ashton Peters and Keller both reached on throwing errors by the third baseman on bunt attempts. A sacrifice bunt and hit batter placed runners at the corners with two outs, and Keller stole home on a designed play that induced a throw to second. Texas State scored three runs on no hits in the inning and increased its lead to 5-1. The Bobcats' final run scored in the fifth when Boatright singled and was sacrificed to second before coming home on another throwing error. Blake came in to relieve Lancour for the final three innings, giving up the only earned run of the game in the top of the seventh on a Jennifer Corkin RBI single that made it 6-2, but the `Cats sealed the win without further problems. Lancour improved to 4-6 by allowing only one hit with four walks and two strikeouts in her four innings of work, while Blake allowed a run on three hits in relief, walking two. Jacobs, who started both games for Texas Tech, allowed two unearned runs on three hits with two strikeouts but still was saddled with the loss to fall to 12-7. Texas State now takes to the road for a weekend series at Nicholls State, who sits in second place in the Southland with a 4-1 SLC mark. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 17, beginning at 1:00 p.m. CST before concluding the series on Mar. 18 at noon. |
