`Cats Avoid Series Sweep With 7-3 Win Over UTA
Feb. 28, 2007 ARLINGTON - Ryan Kos went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer, and Leah Boatright added two runs and an RBI as Texas State earned its first conference win with a 7-3 decision over Texas-Arlington. The Bobcats avoided a series sweep after dropping both games of a doubleheader on Tuesday and improved to 9-9 on the season while UTA fell to 11-8. UTA's Dee Jay Nelson connected on a two-run home run in the bottom of the first to give the Mavs an early lead, but Texas State would answer in the next frame to tie it. Boatright led off the inning with a sharp single to left and scored on an Ashton Peters RBI double. Peters then came home two batters later when Ryan Kos delivered an RBI single through the left side to tie it at 2-2. An inning later it was Boatright again producing at the plate, this time driving in Haley Koop, who had reached on a lead-off walk, on a double to center. Alex Newton then brought home Newton with two outs on an infield pop-up that Mavs second baseman Brittany Stevens misplayed. UTA got a run back in the fifth when Nelson launched her second home run of the game over the left field wall. The solo shot made it 4-3 Bobcats, but Texas State increased its lead in the top of the sixth when Kos hit her first home run of the season that plated two. The lead increased to 7-3 in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Peters with the bases loaded. UTA put two on in the bottom of the inning, but the late rally fell short when Blake struck out Heather Fortenberry to end the game. Blake finished with eight strikeouts and allowed three runs on nine hits while walking two. UTA's Cara Hulme (3-5) took the loss, allowing three earned runs in three innings on five hits and a walk.
Texas State returns home for its Southland Conference home opener series against Southeastern Louisiana Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's doubleheader will start at 1:00 p.m. while Sunday's single game begins at noon. |
