Women's Soccer Releases 2009 Schedule
July 9, 2009 SAN MARCOS - Travel highlights the 2009 Texas State women's soccer schedule, with trips to Irvine and Riverside, California, along with a stint in Birmingham, Alabama, released head coach Kat Conner Thursday afternoon. "We have put together a great schedule this year to help our young team grow," added Conner. "The task of playing on the road is difficult, but the only way to succeed and learn how to play in unfamiliar territory is to go at it head on." This year's slate opens at home against familiar rival St. Mary's, Aug. 22. From there, Texas State will tackle six-straight games on the road beginning Aug. 28 against UC-Irvine. The west coast rally will end Aug. 30 against UC-Riverside before shifting south to the Samford Tournament. Texas State will meet tournament-host Samford, who went 14-4 last season and snagged the school's first-ever automatic bid to the NCAA postseason, along with a first-time meeting with Tennessee Tech. An opportunity for fan support will present itself at the tournament with sophomore goalkeeper Deborah Ross hailing from the area. "This will be extremely nice to allow Deb's family and friends see her play." The Bobcats close out the road test with meetings against Houston (Sept. 11) and Centenary (Sept. 13). Last year, both teams played the Bobcats to one-goal decisions. "Houston was a tough loss last year, so we will be on a tear to even the score and Centenary always has a fight in them when we play, so it will be interesting." "Again, we have a young team that needs to learn how to keep their concentration on the road," added Conner. These five games on the road will be tough, but it will be very helpful when it comes to our road games in Southland Conference play." Before jumping into league action, Texas State will play a grueling four-game week at home against Grambling (Sept. 18), UTEP (Sept. 20), Houston Baptist (Sept. 22) and Prairie View A&M (Sept. 25).
"This stretch will be strenuous and we will have to stay conditioned and healthy to be successful," said Conner. "We will utilize every player on the team and expect them to step up and make their mark." Southland Conference action begins with a two-game weekend on the road against Central Arkansas (Oct. 2) and Northwestern State (Oct. 4), followed by a home weekend that plays host to Lamar (Oct. 9) and McNeese State (Oct. 11). The final pair of road games in SLC action will pit Texas State against Nicholls (Oct. 16) and Southeastern Louisiana (Oct. 18). The 2009 regular season concludes with tough match-ups against Stephen F. Austin on Oct. 23 followed by an Oct. 25 meeting with Sam Houston State. The I-35 Maroon vs. Orange Rivalry series will serve as the final game of the season against UTSA, Oct. 30. "It is hard to say what team is the team to beat in this league or who will be the toughest team to compete with, because everyone brings a wealth of talent to the table. They all have something good," said Conner. The Southland Conference Tournament will be held Nov. 5-8, hosted by Northwestern State in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Texas State posted a 13-4-4 record in 2008 and went 7-0-2 in league action, capturing the Southland Conference Regular Season and Tournament Title.
