Akers Thrilled with 2009-2010 Women's Golf Slate
July 10, 2009
SAN MARCOS - Elite programs from the Big 12 and Big Ten, along with a pair of host tournaments in Austin and Victoria highlight the 2009-2010 schedule head coach Mike Akers has put together for the Texas State women's golf program. "I am very proud and excited to release our 2009-10 tournament schedule," said Akers. "I would speculate this is the most difficult competition schedule any athletic team at Texas State has ever put together." Along with competing against 11 affiliates of the Big 12 Conference, Texas State will face members of the SEC, ACC, Pac 10, Mountain West and WAC conferences. The fall season tees off September 11-13 in College Station at the Texas A&M Invitational and one week later the team heads to Lexington, Kentucky to compete in the University of Kentucky Invitational on September 25-27. The Colorado Invitational is set for Oct. 5-6 and from there, the team heads back to Texas for the Alamo Invitational (October 26-27) and wraps up the fall season with their host tournament, Challenge at Onion Creek. The Challenge at Onion Creek replaced the Bobcats annual Wolfdancer tournament. This year's participants include Texas, Missouri, Baylor, Iowa State, Nebraska, Texas Tech, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Kentucky, Washington State, San Francisco, Augusta State, Boise State, UALR, UTSA and Kennesaw State. The winter break will be spent preparing for an equally active and testing schedule in the spring. The Bobcats head to the UNLV Invitational on Mar. 8-10 and follow it with a Mar. 14-15 stint at the 3rd Annual Claud Jacobs Intercollegiate in Victoria. Last season, Texas State claimed the title in Victoria and will look for a back-to-back championship season. "I feel we have the talent on our team to compete at this level," added Akers. "We will have four returning upperclassmen that bring a wealth of experience back. We also have some extremely talented underclassmen. I am very excited."
On April 5-6, the team makes a return trip to the Canes & Cards Classic in Miami, Florida and the regular season concludes with the spring Baylor Invitational, April 12-13. The Southland Conference Championship Tournament will be held in Huntsville this year and is slated for April 19-21. The Texas State women's golf team finished fourth at the 2008 championship tournament. |
