Texas State Routs Huston-Tillotson 76-29

SAN MARCOS - The Texas State defense recorded 23 steals and forced 37 Huston-Tillotson turnovers while limiting the Rams to the lowest point total for a Bobcat opponent since 1978 in a 76-29 win Wednesday. The last time a `Cats team allowed fewer than 29 points was in an 88-27 home win over St. Mary's on Jan. 17, 1978. The Bobcats (4-3) also tallied their highest point total of the season to remain unbeaten at home. Additionally, the 47-point margin was the largest for Texas State since a 102-43 win last season against Schreiner, who the Bobcats will host Dec. 5. Three Bobcats reached double figures, led by Janesha Washington's game-high 15 points in only 19 minutes. Joyce Ekworomadu added 13 and Brooke DeGrate dropped in10 for the `Cats. HTU (1-3) was led by Ratisha Swearington, who scored seven in the loss. As a team the Rams shot 22.4 percent from the floor and made just 11 field goals. The Bobcats opened the game on a 5-0 run and would never look back, leading throughout the first half. HTU got back within five points at 16-11 with 11:12 remaining in the half, but two quick baskets by the Bobcats built the lead back up to nine and opened the flood gates. Texas State's lead would continue to build to as the `Cats went on a 19-3 run over the next 6:42. Each team added four points over the final 3:30 as the Bobcats headed to the locker room at halftime up 39-18. Ekworomadu made up for a quiet first half by scoring the Bobcats' first seven points out of the break. Texas State also held the Rams scoreless for the first 3:32 of the second half. HTU then went on a 7-2 run to cut it to 48-25 with 11:22 remaining, but the `Cats answered with a 16-2 run and led 65-27 with 6:45 left in the game. Texas State then outscored the Rams 11-2 over the remainder of the contest and did not allow a field goal for the final 7:58.
The Bobcat offense shot a season-best 46.8 percent on 29-of-62 shooting, and the `Cats outrebounded HTU 47-36. Defensively, Ashley Banks had six steals in her first start of the season. Texas State will return to action and close out a season-long four game homestand against Schreiner on Dec. 5. The game will tip at 7 p.m. at Strahan Coliseum. |
