Texas State Wins Home Opener Against Cleveland State 65-54 at CenturyTel Bobcat Classic

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Senior Tori Talbert led Texas State(1-2) to a 65-54 victory over the Cleveland State Vikings(0-4), notching her second double double of the season in the first night of action at the 15th Annual CenturyTel Bobcat Classic. For the night, Talbert scored 22 points and had 13 boards. Cleveland State was led by Erin Martin with 15 points and five steals. "Ashley Perkins really stepped up tonight," said head coach Suzanne Fox. Perkins scored 12 points and pulled down three rebounds in only 16 minutes of play. "Perkins is defiantly a player who can come in a change the game, like she did tonight." The game got off to a slow start for both teams. The score remained 0-0 until Ashley McGruder scored on two free throws for the Bobcats at the 17:36 mark on the clock. Texas State held a lead until the Viking's Martin tied the score 6-6. The Vikings held on to lead 25-23 going into the second half. Early in the second half, Tamara Thompson put the Bobcat's back in the lead 26-25 with a lay-up assisted from Talbert. The `Cats managed to widen the gap to as many as 15 points during a 16 to 4 run with 9:19 left to play. Fox commented, "Cleveland State did a great job of limiting our post play, but our girls fought hard and worked to maintain the lead." Joining Perkins with 12 points on the night was Thompson. Two players for Cleveland State also added 12 points to the Vikings score Maria Rickards and Brittany Korth. Texas A&M and Tulane played the first game of the classic at 5:30 p.m. The Aggies won 79-64 over the Green Wave. Texas A&M was led by Charlette Castile with 19 points and three steals. D'Aundra Henry led Tulane with 22 points, three steals and four assists.
The 15th Annual CenturyTel Bobcat Classic action continues on Saturday with Texas A&M taking on Cleveland State at 4:00 p.m., and Texas State and Tulane tipping-off at 6:00 p.m. at Strahan Coliseum. |
