Texas State Remains Unbeaten in the SLC, Downs Southeastern 81-69

HAMMOND, Louisiana - Texas State remains unbeaten in the Southland Conference 7-0 along with University of Texas-Arlington. The Bobcats defeated the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions 81-69 Thursday at the University Center in Hammond, Louisiana. Ashley McGruder had a memorable evening, scoring a career high 19 points and adding eight assists. Tori Talbert finished with 28 points and 12 boards for her seventh double double of the season. The 'Cats shot 48 percent from the floor and went 29-37 (.784) from the free throw line. Texas State jumped out to a 7-0 lead against Southeastern Louisiana, Thursday evening. The closest the Lions would get in the first half was three points, three times all brought into range by Nakeya Downing. On the other side the 'Cats led by 12 four times during the first half. Ally Kelly put the Bobcats up by a dozen the first time at the 7:48 mark with a long shot from behind the arch. Tamara Thompson did the same for the second 12-point Bobcat lead of the game one and a half minute later. Talbert gave the 'Cats their third and fourth 12-point leads of the night off of jumpers, both assisted by McGruder. The Bobcats headed into the locker room leading 39-30. For the first half the 'Cats made 12 of 13 (.923) baskets from the charity strip. This helps make-up for allowing the Lions to score 16 points off 12 Bobcat turnovers. The 'Cats maintained the lead in the second half, increasing its lead to as many as 20 with three minutes left in the game, Talbert put in another jumper. The Lady Lions did go on a 12-4 run to end the game, sparked by tre from Dacia McGowen. Thompson joins McGruder and Talbert in double digit scoring for the night with 16, including making seven of eight (.875) from the charity strip.
SLU was led by McGowan with 19 points and five assists. Downing with 17 points nearly missed her ninth double double with only nine boards for the night. Next, the Bobcats continue on to Thibodaux for the second game on this road swing in Louisiana. Texas State will take on Nicholls State (3-15, 0-7) on January 30. This will be the second meeting between the Lady Colonels and the Bobcats. |
