Texas State Remains Perfect in Conference Play Cruising Past Sam Houston, 78-58
Jan. 22, 2005 SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State moves to 9-8 overall with its sixth straight win in Southland Conference play today. The Bobcats cruised past the Bearkats, 78-58. With the loss, Sam Houston falls to 5-11, and 2-3 in the SLC. Jeana Hoffman had another career scoring game as she had 13 points at the half and ended the night with 15 points leading all scorers, one assist, one block and two steals. Texas State opened the game with a quick three form Joyce Ekworomadu and Sam Houston scored one from the charity strip. The score remained Texas State 3, Sam Houston 1 until Tori Talbert scored two on a put back at the 15:47 mark in the first half. She then converted on the three-point play to increase the Bobcat lead 6-1. The Bobcats then went on a 21-9 run with five buckets from down town to lead the Bearkats, 28-10. The 'Cats maintained control of the lead to end the first-half up, 39-23. Talbert started the second half by making two shots from the charity strip, after having to leave the first half with foul trouble. The Bobcats reached their biggest lead of the game, 29 points off a pair of free throw shoots from Tamara Thompson. Texas State held off Sam Houston despite the Bearkats making it to the free throw line six times in the last four minutes of the game. Jenna Hoffman put the game away, 78-58 on a jumper with ten seconds left in the game. Despite having foul trouble early, and only having three points in the first half, Talbert ended the game in double figures with 13 points and eight boards. Three other Bobcats had double digits for the day. Jeana Hoffman, Thompson, and Ekworomadu all recorded double-digit scores. Ekworomadu recorded her first double double with ten points and ten boards. Thompson scored 12 and was perfect in all categories.
The Bearkats had two players score ten points, Shauna Singleton and Jamie Davison. Rachel Rivera had seven boards for Sam Houston. Next, the Bobcats hit the road for a two game road swing in Louisiana. Texas State will face Southeastern Louisiana on January 27 before heading to Thibodaux to take on Nicholls State on January 30. |
