Texas State Improves to 5-0 in SLC with 81-76 Win Over NSU

SAN MARCOS, Texas -Texas State women's basketball team improves to 5-0 in the Southland Conference with an, 81-76 victory over Northwestern State. The Lady Demons drop to 7-9 overall and 2-3 in the conference. The Bobcats had their second best overall shooting night, making 30 of 57 (.526) shots from the field. NSU ended the game with a .468 FG percentage, hitting 29 of their 62 attempts. Texas State out shot the Lady Demons at the free-throw line as well 77 percent to 69 percent. During the first half Texas State and Northwestern State battled back and forth for control of the game. The lead bounced back and forth ten times. The Lady Demons captured the final lead of the half, 44-42 with one second left off a lay-up by Tena Matthews. Texas State managed to reach 42 points, its highest points in a first half, with out reaching the free-throw line. Northwestern State went 7-11 (.636) from the line in the first half. Jeana Hoffman surpassed her career/season high score of 12 points before heading into the locker room by scoring 14 points. She sank four of six from long range for 12 of those points, another career/season best. She would end the night with 14 points and four assists. Texas State came out hot in the second half. The 'Cats went on a 14 to four run to give them their biggest lead of the game, nine. Northwestern came from behind with 3:30 left to play on a three point bucket from Amanda Bennett. With 1:54 left in the game Tori Talbert tied the score 76-76 with a lay-up, and gave the Bobcats the one point lead when she made good on her foul shot from the line. Tamara Thompson put the game away with a pair of free throws with eight seconds left on the clock. Talbert and Jeana Hoffman were the two Bobcats to score double figures. Talbert ended the night with 24 points leading all scorers and eight boards.
Three Lady Demons scored double digits, all with 17 points (Bennett, Chassidy Jones, and Diamond Cosby). Jones pulled in nine rebounds to lead the Lady Demons in rebounding. The Bobcats play next on January 22 at 4:00 p.m. as the 'Cats play host to Sam Houston State. |
