SAN MARCOS - Five Bobcats reached double figures in scoring and 11 first-half steals keyed a 14-3 Bobcat run as the Texas State women's basketball team cruised past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 76-48 Thursday at Strahan Coliseum.

The win moved the `Cats (11-7, 4-1 SLC) past A&M-Corpus Christi (8-9, 3-1) and into second place in the Southland Conference's West division.

After the Islanders used a 9-2 run to take an 18-11 lead with 8:53 left in the first half, Brooke DeGrate and the Bobcat defense went to work by putting together the 14-3 run that gave Texas State the lead for good.

DeGrate scored eight of the Bobcats' first 10 points of the run, and the `Cats defense held the Islanders to seven points while forcing 11 turnovers and eight steals over the final eight minutes of the first half to take a 31-25 lead at the break.

Texas State then used another 13-2 run to extend the lead from seven to 18 over a four minute span in the second half. Over the game's final 11 minutes, the Islanders would get no closer than 19 points as the Bobcats cruised to the easy win.

DeGrate and Joyce Ekworomadu each finished with 12 points, and Erica Putnam recorded her third straight double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Janesha Washington and Ashley Riley also contributed 10 points each in the win.

Kirbria Lewis led all scorers with 14 points for A&M-Corpus Christi, who shot 27.3 percent as a team in the second half.

The Bobcats will next make a short trip down I-35 to face Texas-San Antonio on Saturday at 7 p.m. The game will be televised locally on Time Warner Cable San Antonio.
