Wilson's Three Sinks Bobcats, 68-65
Jan. 11, 2007
SAN MARCOS - Tina Wilson's 3-pointer with 10.5 seconds left proved to be the game-winner as Southeastern Louisiana (10-6, 2-1) outlasted the Bobcat women in a 68-65 loss on Thursday night at Strahan Coliseum. Erica Putnam recorded her second double-double of the season with a 12 point, 11 rebound effort for the `Cats (9-7, 2-1), who missed a last-second three by Ashley Leffingwell that would have tied the game and sent it into overtime. Texas State trailed for most of the second half, but took a 63-62 lead with 1:42 left when Brooke DeGrate got a steal and lay-up for the Bobcats' first lead since a two point advantage with eight minutes to play. The lead was short-lived, as Wilson answered with her fifth of six 3-pointers as the Lady Lions retook the lead by two with 1:19 remaining. Joyce Ekworomadu then hit a jumper to tie it at 68-68 with 1:04 on the clock, but again Wilson came up big for SLU. After Brenita Williams, SLU's leading scorer coming into the game, missed a jumper, Brooke Necaise grabbed the offensive rebound and the Lions called timeout, setting up Wilson's game-winning three from the top of the key. The Bobcats started off the game looking good, opening action with a 10-2 run and heading to the locker room at half time up by three, 28-25. SLU answered in the second half, outscoring Texas State 16-7 over the first six minutes of the half, as the Lady Lions built a six point lead and were able to match the Bobcats with each basket as the game featured four lead changes in the final 3:29. Janesha Washington led the Bobcats with 13 points off the bench to go along with Putnam's 12, and DeGrate recorded six steals for the second time in three games.
Wilson led all scorers with 26 points, a career-high for the senior, and Kristy Carlin added 12 for SLU. The Bobcats now look to bounce back from their loss Saturday afternoon when they host Nicholls State (3-11, 1-2), who fell at Texas-Arlington 87-36 Thursday. Tip-off will be at 4 p.m. at Strahan Coliseum. |
