Valery Jackson enters her second season as a member of the Bobcat staff, after coming to San Marcos last year from Frank Phillips College in Borger, Texas. Jackson coached the Western Junior College Athletic Conference member from 2000-2004.

A native of Morton, Texas, Jackson received All-State honors two times as a player in high school, and was named to the USA Today All-American team while leading Morton High School to a State Championship.

After high school, Jackson continued her basketball career at Western Texas for two seasons, helping the Lady Dusters to a sixth-place finish in the National Junior College Tournament.

Jackson then moved on to Abilene Christian where she earned degrees in health and physical education, and while earning her degrees, Jackson stayed active with basketball. She served as a graduate assistant coach during the 1992-93 season, and in 1993, Jackson was named assistant women's basketball coach under current Texas State head coach Suzanne Fox. Jackson also served as head coach for ACU's junior varsity squad during the 1994-95 season.

Jackson's next move took her to Dallas and Class 4A Wilmer-Hutchins High School where she was the head coach for two seasons. In those two seasons, she restored the Lady Eagles back to a competitive high school team. Her first season at the helm she led the team to an 18-win campaign, up from five wins the previous season. The next season Jackson led the Lady Eagles to the playoffs.

With impressive credentials and a knack for winning, Western Texas brought Jackson back to her former stomping grounds to lead the Lady Duster program. Jackson spent three years trying to improve Western Texas, but ultimately the school dropped the program.

One of coach Jackson's greatest accomplishments has been her teams GPA's. Since 1997, her teams have not had an average GPA below a 3.0, and in her final season at Frank Phillips, the team was honored as the Junior College Academic Team of the Year with an average team GPA of 3.65.

Jackson is involved in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, Black Coaches Association and the WBCA.
