Suzanne Fox enters her 13th season as head women's basketball coach at Texas State University and 19th year overall on the bench. Under her direction, the Bobcats have made an NCAA Championship and WNIT appearance. Fox tops the Southland Conference coaches with a 158-184 record, claiming not only the most wins by a current SLC coach, but the most wins in Texas State women's basketball history.
Last season, the Bobcats went 12-16 overall, claiming wins from top programs like Navy and Long Island. Fox's final victory of the season, a 73-60 win over Stephen F. Austin, marked a milestone on her resume, achieving her 275th career coaching victory. In 2008-09, Texas State placed a single-member on the All-Southland Conference postseason team and off the court; Bobcat Marie Moser (2007-09) was the recipient of the league's F.L. McDonald Scholarship. This post-season scholarship award is the Southland's ultimate academic honor.
Just two years ago, Fox made history with Texas State's first 20-plus win season. The 21-11 overall record was solidified by a 14-2 SLC record that clinched the 2007-08 Southland Conference Championship. The Bobcats advanced to the Women's National Invitation Tournament, a first in school history as well, and advanced to the second round. In Texas State's first game of the postseason, the team defeated SWAC powerhouse Prairie View A&M in a historic 84-83 win. The win not only advanced Texas State to its second game in the WNIT, but marked the first-ever postseason tournament win by either the men's or women's basketball team at Texas State as a Division I institution.
The season marked the third-straight year the women's basketball team finished with a .600 or higher win percentage, a feat that had not been accomplished since the 1992-94 season under WBCA Hall of Fame member and former Bobcat head coach Linda Sharp.
The stellar year was sealed with Fox being named the Southland Conference Coach of the Year for the second-time in her career. Alongside Fox in league honors was senior Joyce Ekworomadu who was named 2007-08 SLC Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year.
From 2004-2007, Fox highlighted her resume by earning her 200th career victory and 125th win at Texas State. In 2005, Fox coached two-time Southland Conference Player of the Year Tori Talbert and SLC Newcomer of the Year Tamara Thompson.
In the 2002-03 season, Talbert earned her first Player of the Year honor, aiding the team to an 18-14 season en route to the NCAA Championship Tournament. This marked just the second NCAA postseason appearance in Bobcat basketball history and the first for Fox in her Division I coaching history.
During her 12-year stint at Texas State, Fox has coached six All-SLC First-Team members and 14 to the second and third teams. The Bobcats have claimed one Freshman of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and one two-time Player of the Year in Talbert under Fox.
Additionally, three former student-athletes have gone on to compete professionally oversees and many are sustaining very successful careers in the public service industry as health professionals, firefighters and coaches.
Prior to Texas State, Fox was the head coach at her alma mater, Abilene Christian University for five years. In her final four season at ACU, she also served as the Senior Women's Administrator.
In her time as the Wildcats' head coach, Fox coached two National Players of the Year and two First-Team All-Americans in addition to winning two Lone Star Conference Titles In addition to the team accolades, Fox brought home her own hardware in 1996, when she was named the 1995-96 WBCA National Coach of the Year.
Before Fox was named head coach at ACU, she served as an assistant to long-time head coach Burl McCoy.
Prior to her success as a coach, Fox played four seasons at ACU, garnering several honors in the Wildcat purple and black. Fox was named GTE Second-Team Academic All-America, First-Team All-LSC, Conference MVP, All-Academic LSC and LSC Defensive Player of the Year.
Currently, Fox remains No. 7 All-Time in the ACU career-scoring list with 1,502 points and an 18-point average per game in her senior campaign.
Fox earned her bachelor's degree in physical education and math education in 1990 from Abilene Christian. As an NCAA post-graduate scholarship recipient, she also received her master's degree in school administration from ACU. Fox was awarded the ACU Trustee's Student Award in 1990 and was selected to speak at a GTE Academic All-America seminar in 1991.
Presently, Fox serves as the chair for the Carol Eckman Award committee. The award is given to an active WBCA coach who best demonstrates the character of the late Carol Eckman, the mother of the collegiate women's basketball national championship.
