Shane Howell begins his second season as the men's golf coach at Texas State University, after a highly-successful 2007-2008 inaugural campaign.

Howell led the Texas State men's golf team to six Top-Five finishes, including a Runner-Up title at the Southland Conference Championships. The finish tabbed the Bobcats best SLC tournament finish since 1998.

Under Howell's guidance, then junior Corey Roberson was named to the All-Southland Conference Third Team after shaving two strokes off his average and posting three Top-10 finishes on the season. Howell also guided Michael Carnes to a first-place finish at the 54-man field Battle of the Bend tournament, the highest individual finish for Texas State last season.

Prior to joining the coaching staff at Texas State, Howell coached the previous four seasons at the University of Virginia until 2007.

During his tenure at Virginia, Howell was responsible for many of the day-to-day operations of the program. In addition to focusing on full swing and short game instruction with members of the Cavalier golf team, he recruited junior golfers both nationally and in Europe, scheduled practices and qualifiers, and handled travel arrangements for the program.

Howell also had fundraising responsibilities and was the assistant tournament director for the Cavalier Classic Golf Tournament. While at the University of Virginia, Howell was Co-Director of the NIKE U.S. Sports Golf Camp.

Prior to joining the Virginia staff, he worked four years as an assistant golf professional at Glenmore Country Club in Keswick, Va. While at Glenmore, he worked with one of the top golf instructors in the country, Kandi Comer.

A native of Beaumont, Howell played two seasons at Lamar and graduated in 1999. He also played two seasons at Temple College and earned Division II Junior College All-American honors in 1995.

Following graduation, he worked at the New Orleans Country Club as an outside assistant. At the legendary country club, he supervised the caddie program as well as helped coordinate the club's junior golf camp.
