Junior quarterback Chase Wasson made his second straight start at quarterback in place of red-shirt freshman Bradley George who suffered an elbow injury in the Nicholls State game Nov. 2. Wasson completed 12-of-19 passes for 192 yards and three touchdowns. He also carried the ball 16 times for 82 yards.
After one quarter of play, Texas State had run nine offensive plays for 34 net yards. Sam Houston State had 171 yards after one quarter of play. Texas State would go on to out-gain the Bearkats 395 yards to 386.
A Texas State opponent scored on the first series of a game for the first time since Northern Colorado put together an eight-play, 80-yard drive to begin a game. The series was capped by a 30-yard touchdown run. The Northern Colorado game also marked the last time the Bobcats had fallen behind 14-0 in the first quarter of a game.
Texas State fullback Blake Burton registered his third career touchdown reception. Burton also caught a three-yard touchdown pass against Southern Utah earlier in the season. He had an 18-yard touchdown reception against Texas A&M in 2005.
It took 11 games, but Texas State finally generated some numbers with its punt return game. Through 10 games, Texas State ranked No. 116 nationally in punt returns, averaging 2.1 yards per return. The Bobcats had just 34 punt return yards on 16 returns. But after a 14-yard return in the first quarter Saturday, Morris Crosby had a 26-yard return early in the third quarter. The play set up a 49-yard touchdown run by Stan Zwinggi which gave the Bobcats a 21-14 lead with 9:14 to play in the third quarter.
In addition to a season-long touchdown run (49 yards), Stan Zwinggi tipped then caught a ball near the line of scrimmage and raced 80 yards for a touchdown reception which gave the Bobcats a 28-14 lead in the third quarter. Zwinggi registered his second straight and third 100-yard rushing game of the year. He finished the season with 735 rushing yards.
Texas State's two goal-line stands in the fourth quarter marked the 14th and 15th times this season an opponent came away without any points in a trip into the Red Zone against the Bobcats, including now three times when the ball went over on downs. Additionally, opponents have missed seven field goals, been intercepted twice, fumbled once and had the half end twice.
