Texas State Head Coach David Bailiff
Opening Statement...
The next couple of weeks are really going to reveal what kind of team we are. It's hard on these guys but on Monday we're going to come back and try to be the best team we can be. This is when we truly live for each other as a team, here in the next couple of weeks.
This game we had some inopportune penalties. One in the red zone on the hold that took a touchdown off the board. One on the kickoff return that took that off the board. That's the difference in the game right there. How long was the one pass they scored on? How long was the one pass that got them down there for the other touchdown? There's three or four plays in every ball game that make the difference, and those were the three or four plays. Whoever makes plays last wins the ball game, and we didn't make them.
On the play call on the two-point conversion...
That was something we worked on. It wasn't a snap decision. It may have looked like a snap decision, but that's something that we've rehearsed. Chase is a playmaker, and we wanted to put the ball in his hands. If we give the ball to him ten more times, he's probably going to score ten more times. We believe in Chase, and he believes in himself.
On the way the team played in the final minutes...
Momentum's attitude, and I think we just had a change of attitude and started believing in ourselves. We also had no drops and better protection.
Quarterback Bradley George
On the difference in the offense late in the game...
I think it's just like what Coach said. We didn't have any drops, blocked better and I was making some better throws. Momentum had a lot to do with it, and once you start believing in yourself, the offensive line starts blocking better and I started making better throws. We had to change it around and swing momentum, and we didn't do it until it was too late.
Linebacker Courtney Smith
All week the coaches did a great job with the game plan. I just executed what was called because they put me in the position to make the play, and I felt that I had to do that. I didn't let the coaches down.
Defensive Lineman Donovan King
On his touchdown...
It really meant a lot to me that I was able to contribute to the team and put some points on the board. There comes a time when you've just got to work harder and do a lot more for the team. It's not about us, it's about the team.
Nicholls State Head Coach Jay Thomas
On the win...
This keeps us in the hunt for the championship now. It's great for our program, great for our kids. It showed a lot about our team by being down at halftime and coming back in the second half.
On his quarterbacks...
(Quarterback Vincent Montgomery) was a big momentum swing for us. You could tell he had fresh legs. We knew we were going to play him, it just wasn't set when. (Starting quarterback Zack Chauvin) took a shot to the head, so at halftime we decided we were going to hold him out.
On Texas State...
Texas State made plays. Give Coach Bailiff and his staff a lot of credit, our defense just came up with a big stop on the two-point conversion.
Nicholls State Offensive Coordinator H.T. Henry
This is great for the team. We're still not where we want to be, but we're a lot closer than we were before the game. Victories don't last long for coaches. I'll worry about SFA when we get out of the parking lot and start breaking down things on the computer.
