SAN MARCOS - The Texas State baseball team is favored to win its fourth Southland Conference regular season championship by a vote of the league's head coaches and sports information directors, released league officials Tuesday.

Texas State received five first-place votes in the coaches' poll and five first-place votes in the SID poll. The Bobcats return 19 letterwinners, five starters and nine pitchers from the 2009 Championship team. Last season, the Bobcats won their first league title since 1997 and posted its best record in program history with 41 overall wins and 24 league win.

"Being selected as No. 1 in the polls is a tremendous compliment to last year's team and the returning members of our championship squad," said head coach Ty Harrington. "It certainly sets up expectations and we'll be fighting to live up to those expectations all season long."

Sam Houston State was picked to finish second behind Texas State. The Bearkats received four first-place votes in the coaches' poll and four first-place votes in the SID poll.

The remaining first-place votes went to Lamar (3-coaches; 2-SID), while less than 12 points separated the top three teams.

Both polls named Southeastern Louisiana fourth, followed by UTSA, UT Arlington, Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin. Central Arkansas and McNeese State interchanged for the ninth and tenth two spots on the respective polls.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Nicholls close out both polls in the final two places, respectively.

Also released today were the Southland Conference preseason baseball teams and Texas State placed four members on the combined teams. Outfielders Tyler Sibley and Bret Atwood were named to the first team, while Kyle Livingstone and Jason Martinson were named to the second team.

The 2010 season of Texas State baseball is set to begin Feb. 19-21 against the Houston Cougars at Cougar Field. The Bobcats home opener is slated for March 3 when they play host to the Rice Owls.
