BEAUMONT - Led by James Ortiz and Sam Bernal's Top 20 finishes, Texas State's men's cross country team placed fourth at the Southland Conference Championship ran Monday at Idylwild Golf Club. Texas State's women's team placed seventh at the championship.

With a roster filled with newcomers, the Bobcats' fourth place finish came after the squad finished eighth a year ago.

Ortiz clocked a time of 25:31 on the 8K course while Bernal was on his heals, finishing with a time of 25:33. The Bobcats also benefited from two other runners finishing among the top 31 at the event. Javier Prado was 27th (26:06) while Josue Cervantes was 31st (26:17).

Stephen F. Austin won the men's event with 32 points, ahead of Sam Houston State (50 points), Lamar (116) and Texas State (144).

Tenley Determan placed 20th for the Bobcat women's team while Melisa Aguilar was 28th. Determen finished the 6K women's course with a time of 22:46 while Aguilar clocked a time of 23:13.

On its home course, Lamar's women scored 37 points to win the women's title. Stephen F. Austin was second (49 points) while UTSA was third (98).
