SAN MARCOS - James Ortiz clocked a time of 25:41 to win the individual collegiate championship and lead the Bobcats to a first-place finish at the Texas State Classic Saturday at Gary Job Corps.

Ortiz led a group of five Texas State runners who all placed in the top 10 as the `Cats scored 24 points. Finishing second was Sam Houston State with 34 points while Texas-San Antonio placed third with a score of 86 points.

The Texas State women's team placed fourth with 109 points, finishing behind Texas (42), Sam Houston State (53) and Texas-San Antonio.

Tenley Determan placed eight to lead the Bobcat women with a time of 18:30 on the 4800 meter course.

Finishing right behind Ortiz on the men's side was freshman Alex Escontrias (26:35), Roel Elizalde (26:36) and Francisco Avelar (26:41) who placed fourth through sixth among collegians. Also finishing in the top 10 for the Bobcats was Javier Prado who ran the 8K course in an eight-place time of 26:55.

Texas State is slated to run again next week at the Chile Pepper Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
