Texas State has five athletes who head into this week's Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with the top times and distances in their respective events including senior Abby Ruston who could dominate the field events much like she did the Indoors earlier this year.

Ruston has the best mark in both the shot put (16.80 meters) and the discus (50.78 meters) going into the SLC Championships which begin Friday at Homer Bryce Stadium in Nacogdoches. Ruston was named SLC Newcomer of the Year during the indoor season.

The outdoor championship runs through Sunday on the Stephen F. Austin campus.

Slated for Friday is the first day of the multis - the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon. Also, sophomore Robert Melin will look to successfully defend his 2006 title in the hammer throw. He set a meet record with a throw of 54.21 meters and surpassed that mark earlier this year with a throw of 57.61 meters. In addition to the hammer, the men's and women's 10,000 meters will be competed on Friday.

The long jump, high jump, javelin and shot put are set for Saturday along with the prelims of the running events. Valerie Hancock shares the top mark in the SLC in the high jump this season with a height of 1.75 meters. Also Saturday, Casey DeWitt will look to better her time in the 3000 meter steeplechase after recording a time of 11:01.86 earlier this season, fourth-best in the conference this season.

The Bobcat women could dominate the triple jump event on Sunday as the squad features the four top marks in the conference this season. Tamequa Poole recorded a mark of 12.13 meters earlier this season which is tops in the conference. Also ranking in the top four are Sara Olayiwola (11.93m), Sonetriya Mayfield (11.85m) and Alaysha Ford (11.78m).

Mila Litvinova has the top time in the 400 meters (52.77) while Camilla Davis' times in the 100 and 200 meters are both among the top four by a conference athlete this season.

Several other athletes will be looking to hit NCAA Regional-qualifying marks. Erroll Harris in the 400 meters and Clayton Bynum in the 110 meter hurdles are both less than a tenth of a second off qualifying marks this season while Chad Menefee's 52.84 in the 400 meter hurdles is just about two tenths off the qualifying standard.

Gatis Spunde has already qualified for the 400m hurdles with a season-best time of 51.55.

On the women's side, Davis and Iris Darrington are both less than two tenths off the 200 meter qualifying standard while DeWitt could qualify in the 3000 meter steeplechase which has a qualifying time of 10:50.25.

Junior Katya Kostetskaya, who qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 800 meters earlier this year, will run the 800 for the first time during the outdoor season this weekend. Kosteskaya has been on the track this season but has focused on the relay events.
