SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Abby Ruston's third and final shot put throw was the Texas State senior's best and one of the top marks overall as she will advance to Saturday's finals at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

On Thursday, Ruston made improvement on her second and third attempt. Leading off Flight 2, Ruston had an opening throw of 16.01 meters. She followed up with a mark of 16.36 meters then launched her third attempt 16.54 meters (54-03.25).

Texas senior Michelle Carter had a throw of 17.15 meters (56-03.25) on her first attempt and heads into Saturday's event championship as the only athlete to have a throw over 17 meters.

Earlier this season, Ruston won the NCAA Mid West Regional with a throw of 17.23 meters (56-06.50).

The top 12 qualifiers move on to the finals. Saturday's finals of the event are slated for 10 a.m. Pacific/ 12 p.m. Central. The finals will be carried live by CBS.
