NACOGDOCHES - Texas State sophomore Robert Melin repeated as the hammer throw champion as the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships began Friday at Stephen F. Austin.

Melin won the event with a throw of 57.88 meters (189-11). Melin also won the hammer championship as a freshman. Saturday he will compete in the shot put and enters Sunday's discus event with the best performance in the SLC.

Texas State's women scored points in the first event of the championship, the 10,000 meters. Tenley Determan placed fourth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 38:22.46. The time is the sixth-best mark in Texas State history.

Whitney Perkins clocked a time of 38:33.95 to place fifth while Heather Bullin placed seventh with a time of 39:28.33.

Texas State has athletes currently in seventh place in both the decathlon and heptathlon after the first day of both combined events. Veronica Rodriguez was Texas State's top performer in the heptathlon with a score of 2,775 points after four of seven events. In the decathlon, Dmitri Kabakov scored 3,229 points through five events. Kabakov still has some of his best events left including the pole vault on Saturday.

In addition to the second day of combined events, the prelims of most of the running events and the championships of the long jump, high jump, javelin and shot put will be competed Saturday. The 2007 SLC Championship concludes Sunday.
