Jim Wacker Field at Bobcat Stadium![]() Football Fan Guide
The aura that fell on Texas State University's Jim Wacker Field at Bobcat Stadium in 2005 was like the heavy morning fog that sometimes settles on the valleys of the Texas Hill Country. This aura laid heavy on the landscape. Unlike an early morning fog which shrouds the countryside in a peaceful silence, the dense atmosphere that loomed over Bobcat Stadium carried an electrical charge that would power a Texas State team to an unprecedented NCAA Division I-FCS season. In its Silver Anniversary season in Bobcat Stadium, Texas State went 9-1, logged four of the stadium's Top 10 crowds and shattered records for overall attendance (128,751) and per-game average (12,875) while playing an unparalleled 10 games at what is one of NCAA Division I-FCS's premier football facilities. The 2005 season also saw Texas State record back-to-back sellouts for the first time in school history. After scoring 34 straight points to beat Georgia Southern 50-35 in the opening round of the playoffs, Texas State drew 15,411 for its NCAA quarterfinal game against Cal Poly. The Northern Iowa game drew 15,712, the third-largest crowd in school history. Originally called Bobcat Stadium, the facility's name was changed to Jim Wacker Field at Bobcat Stadium in 2002 to honor Texas State's former football coach and director of athletics. Also in 2002, the End Zone Complex was completed and dedicated. The facility located in the south end zone of Bobcat Stadium houses the athletic program's football as well as track and field operations. The complex includes several state-of-the-art amenities donated by faithful Bobcat fans. · Wallace & Lyla Dockall Football Meeting Room · Dan Brown Football Meeting Room · Chuck Nash Strength & Conditioning Room · CenturyTel Track & Field Locker Room · The Wiley Family Track Office Suite · Walter & Eleanor Pulver Student Athlete Study Room · Sac-N-Pac Room (Donated by the Warren Family) · Wells Fargo Stadium Terrace · Subway Head Football Coach's Office · North Carolina Furniture Football Lounge · Albert Gonzalez & Susan Angell Football War Room · Tal & Leslie Milan Defensive Coordinator's Office · Greg & Teresa Hagan Offensive Coordinator's Office The End Zone Complex also has a full service training center, meeting rooms and coaching staff offices. The Sac-N-Pac Room (named after the store chain, owned and operated by the Warren Family) is located on the second floor and one of two major banquet rooms which are a part of Texas State athletics. In addition to playing host to athletic donors on game days, the Sac-N-Pac Room along with the Maroon and Gold Room at Strahan Coliseum play host to events of all kinds throughout the year. During pre-game activities, the Sac-N-Pac Room, along with the Wells Fargo Terrace overlooking Jim Wacker Field, allow fans to enjoy a pre-game meal and watch team warm-ups. In 2006, the Bill Miller Room was dedicated on the west side of the stadium in honor of legendary Football Coach and Athletic Director Bill Miller. The Bill Miller Room is used during every home football game to host Athletic Alumni functions and is available for other pre-game events. The room features photos and athletic accomplishments of past Bobcats, and is the home to all of our "T" Association members on football game days. The capacity of the stadium is 15,218 but will grow to over 16,000 beginning with the 2009 season with the addition of a new Westside expansion including a three-tier structure that features, a premium club seating level with 450 open-air seats and a suite level with 15 luxury suites. The Bobcat Stadium playing surface is AstroPlay® artificial turf which is a new concept in field-turf systems. The turf is a grass-like, non-abrasive, polyethylene fiber matrix filled with special rubber granules. AstroPlay® has been engineered to offer the best aspects of natural grass without the inherent drawbacks such as high maintenance, low use levels, game cancellations and uneven footing. AstroPlay® is made by Southwest Recreational Industries, Inc. The stadium's video scoreboard manufactured by Daktronics of Brookings, S.D. in 2007, features one of the largest video screens in the Southland Conference. Additionally, two ProAd displays keep fans in the action with game prompts during the on-field action. The track at Bobcat Stadium was resurfaced in 2002 by Southwest Recreational Industries, Inc., and features EUROTAN® WS, a paved-in-place, structurally sprayed polyurethane surface. Original construction of Texas State University's Bobcat Stadium began in 1979 and was completed in August, 1981. The project also included the demolition of Evans Stadium and the addition of more than 2,000 parking spaces. The stadium was designed by Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam of Houston and built by Kunz Construction Co. of San Antonio.
During its 25-year history, Bobcat Stadium has been a multi-use facility. It has been the home of the Texas Special Olympics, and site of scenes from the movie, "The Ringer", and the hit NBC TV show, "Friday Night Lights".
